Abstract
Stanislas Dehaene and his colleagues have set out to understand mental life, to decipher how the brain encodes our thoughts and thus find universal laws in the field of experimental psychology. To achieve this goal, they have tried to put consciousness in mathematical terms and analyze it from machines to measure it and thus remove it from the primacy of its study in philosophy. The purpose of this article is to study what Dehaene understands by “consciousness” through the concept of Global Neural Workspace (GNWS) and for this purpose it is discussed what the GNWS is, what its essential properties are and how these conclusions have been reached from its study in the laboratory. At the end of this paper, some concerns are left open which, although the author states that they are solved with the ETNG, remain unsolved.
